Short answer: Ramadan in Malaysia 2027 is expected to start around February 8, 2027, and Malaysia’s official 2027 holiday list puts Hari Raya Puasa (Eid al-Fitr) on Wednesday March 10 and Thursday March 11, 2027, subject to change. For travelers, the highlight is the evening Ramadan bazaar, which Tourism Malaysia promotes as a way to try local food. Not every bazaar stall or iftar buffet is halal-certified, so check JAKIM’s Verify Halal tool if certification matters to you, and expect heavy traffic around Hari Raya.

Sources: Cabinet Office of Malaysia, public holidays 2027 (PDF); dates marked with an asterisk there are “subject to change” because they follow the moon sighting. Daily suhoor and iftar times for Kuala Lumpur are in our Ramadan 2027 fasting hours planner.
School holidays: a third-party calendar site reports that the first school term break of 2027 runs from about March 5 to 13 or 6 to 14 (depending on the state group) and covers Hari Raya (Reported, eCentral). The Ministry of Education’s own 2027 calendar is a scanned PDF we could not read, so treat these dates as Not checked yet on the official source.
Ramadan bazaars in Malaysia: what to expect
Tourism Malaysia writes that when Ramadan comes, “it is a cue to visit one of the many local bazaars” and that “these bustling marketplaces come alive in the evenings” (Stated, Tourism Malaysia, Ramadan bazaars in KL and Selangor). Its list for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor includes:
- TTDI (Taman Tun Dr Ismail): “renowned for its incredibly diverse food choices” (Stated).
- Kampung Baru: “transforms into a bustling marketplace” in Ramadan (Stated). Tourism Malaysia launched its 2013 Ramadan bazaar campaign at Masjid Jamek Kampong Bharu (Stated, Tourism Malaysia, 2013).
- Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR) and Masjid India: a busy bazaar area during the fasting month (Stated).
- Also listed: Bukit Bintang, Bangsar, Taman Melawati, Stadium Shah Alam, Danau Kota, Kompleks PKNS and Putrajaya (Stated).
How many bazaars? For 2026, Malaysia’s state broadcaster RTM reported 42 Ramadan bazaar locations in Kuala Lumpur with nearly 4,500 traders, while an earlier plan reported by The Star mentioned 37 locations (Conflicting: RTM, 2026; The Star, November 2025). The 2027 list is not published yet. Official opening hours were not found; Tourism Malaysia only says “evenings”.

Is Ramadan bazaar and buffet food halal-certified?
Do not assume it. JAKIM, Malaysia’s halal authority, has said that promoting buka puasa buffets and Ramadan sets as halal without proper halal certification is an offence under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 (Reported, The Star, January 2024). JAKIM’s director-general encouraged consumers to verify through JAKIM’s official portal or the Verify Halal application before buying (Reported, Bernama, April 2026). The portal has a “Verify Halal Status” search that covers food premises and products (Stated, halal.gov.my).
Iftar at hotels and official Ramadan events
- Hotel iftar packages: in 2024, Tourism Malaysia promoted “My Ramadan Experience” hotel packages that included “a complimentary Iftar for two” and the chance to “explore Ramadan bazaars” (Stated, Tourism Malaysia, 2024). A 2027 edition is not announced yet.
- Public iftar in Kuala Lumpur: in 2026, the tourism ministry (MOTAC) and the national culture department held iftar events at Dataran Merdeka from 6 pm on selected evenings (Stated, DBKL, 2026). Watch for the 2027 announcement.
- Hari Raya open houses: Tourism Malaysia describes how families “throw open houses where delicious food and cakes specially prepared for the festival are served” (Stated, Tourism Malaysia, Hari Raya Aidilfitri).
Eating in public during Ramadan in Malaysia
We found no official rule addressed to tourists. News reports explain that Muslims in Malaysia are subject to sharia law on fasting, and that non-Muslims caught selling food, drinks or tobacco to Muslims during fasting hours can also face penalties (Reported, CNN, April 2024). Restaurants serving non-Muslim customers stay part of daily life in this multicultural country; if you are not fasting, eating discreetly during the day is a simple courtesy.
Hari Raya traffic: plan around the balik kampung rush
Before Hari Raya, many Malaysians drive home to their villages (balik kampung). For Aidilfitri 2026, highway operator PLUS expected up to 2.3 million vehicles per day on peak days and encouraged drivers to plan their journeys with its travel-time advisory in the PLUS app (Stated, PLUS media statement, March 2026). A 2027 forecast is not out yet; expect busy roads, buses and domestic flights in the days before March 10, 2027.
