The Maldives looks like the perfect halal honeymoon: a Muslim country, turquoise lagoons and villas over the water. Many travelers assume that means every resort is halal. It doesn’t. The Maldives has two very different worlds, the local islands and the resort islands, and the rules are not the same.
Here’s what the rules actually say, with sources, and how to choose a stay that fits you.
The short answer
- Local islands (where Maldivians live, including guesthouses): alcohol is not allowed, and daily life follows Islamic norms.
- Resort islands: licensed resorts may serve alcohol and, with an import license, pork. So a resort in the Maldives is not automatically halal.
- A newer group of resorts is being developed specifically for halal tourism, without pork and alcohol (more on that below).
What the law says about alcohol
Alcohol is only sold and served at licensed tourist establishments such as resorts. Outside the resorts it is prohibited, and you can’t bring it into the country. Customs confiscates it on arrival (Islands.com). The sale of pork and alcohol to tourist establishments has been regulated since 1975 (Minivan News archive).
What this means for you: at almost any regular resort, alcohol is served in restaurants and bars, and often stocked in the minibar. If that matters to you, ask before booking for an alcohol-free minibar, and ask whether there are alcohol-free dining areas.
And pork?
Importing pork and pork products into the Maldives is prohibited unless a license is obtained (WTO register of import restrictions). Licensed resorts can therefore serve pork. Whether all the meat at your resort is halal is something only the resort can confirm.
Halal-tourism resorts: the new category
The Maldives is actively encouraging halal tourism. Reports on recent tender rounds for new resort islands describe sites designated for halal tourism, where resorts must exclude pork and alcohol and serve halal-certified food (Halal Times; background: Salaam Gateway). Some existing resorts already offer halal food and alcohol-free rooms.

Here is what booking listings show for five Maldives resorts Muslim travelers often ask about. Only one, Fiyavalhu, is listed as an alcohol-free property.

What this means: Maldives resorts are excellent for privacy, especially villas with fully secluded pools, but at most resorts alcohol is served on the island. Questions to ask a Maldives resort before you book
- Is all the meat served at the resort halal? Who certifies it?
- Is pork served anywhere on the island, and is it prepared in a separate kitchen?
- Can the minibar in our villa be alcohol-free?
- Are there restaurants or areas where no alcohol is served?
- (Honeymoon) Is our villa’s pool or deck fully private, not overlooked by neighboring villas?

FAQ
Is the Maldives a Muslim country? Yes. Its constitution states that no law contrary to any tenet of Islam may be enacted (Minivan News archive). That doesn’t make every tourist resort halal, as explained above.
Can I drink alcohol in the Maldives? Only at licensed resorts and similar tourist establishments. Alcohol is prohibited on local islands and can’t be brought into the country (Islands.com).
Is the food halal at Maldives resorts? Not automatically. Licensed resorts can import pork. Ask your resort whether all meat is halal, or choose a resort that is designated for halal tourism.
Is the Maldives good for a halal honeymoon? It can be excellent, especially with a private villa. Check food, alcohol and privacy first using the questions above.
